“In the 1970s nobody died but in the 1980s all that changed.” Brian Hall
The 1970s were a golden age in Himalayan climbing. New techniques meant smaller teams could make fast, lightweight ascents of the Himalayan giants. Spending less time on the high mountains meant less exposure to risk and it seemed a new age of safer climbing had dawned. Then came the 1980s and the high mountains began to take a terrible toll on those who came to climb them.
In this podcast, Brain Hall, talks about his experiences living through those two decades and gives his analysis of what changed.
