Suzanna Cruickshank has found a new sense of freedom and a connection with nature by swimming in the open water of the lakes and rivers of the Lake District. Suzanna was originally a hillwalker and loved getting out on to the high tops. When she found herself caring for her father, who was seriously ill, long walks were out. A friend introduced her to swimming in the open water of a nearby lake. Suzanna loved it and her passion for swimming in open water has grown from there.
“I didn’t start swimming straight away. I grew up in a city so if you were going to go for a swim you went to the swimming baths. I didn’t imagine you could swim in a lake! “When I was younger, you were always told to keep away from open water because it was dangerous and you might die.”
In this podcast Suzanna talks to John D Burns about how her love of swimming in the outdoors grew and about her new book Wild Swimming in the Lake District
