Listen to Russ Moorhouse talking about his year in the wild sleeping on over 200 Lake District peaks.
Do you spend your working days dreaming of being out in the hills? Russ did exactly that for years working in his job as a banker. He spent his time with wealthy people helping them manage their money but realised that many of these folk were not happy and had spent their lives chasing wealth.
He decided to change things, left his job, and set out on his mission to spend a night on every hill in the Lake District in Wainwright’s guide book. That’s no mean feat and the experience changed his life.
Listen to Russ talking about how that happened.
“In short, I camped on all the 214 Wainwright mountains over one year spread equally across all seasons,” Says Russ. “I was inspired by the Nan Shepherd quote ‘no one knows the mountain completely who has not slept on it’ I guess you could say I now know the Lake District better than anyone.”
A great challenge – to sleep on all 214 Wainwrights.
Russ is the first person to do this & in all weather – winter & summer, wind, rain, snow & moonlight.

A book that’s light enough to stuff in your pack. One you can dip in and out of to select some bedtime reading that will send you into a sweet slumber

Forget him (Wainwright) you are your own man. Not everyone could do what you are doing, it’s unique. And get a pet fox, then everyone will love you.’

Russ has completed an amazing achievement of sleeping on each of the 214 Wainwright Fells over the course of a year. The book captures Russ’ love of the fells, the beautiful sunsets and sunrises which he has experienced and the storms that made it a real challenge. I really enjoyed dipping into the book randomly (like Russ selected his order to camp on the fells) and reading the short description of that fell and the camping spot, with each fell accompanied by a stunning picture.
