I’m delighted to be able to tell you that the scheme I outlined in such terms of derision yesterday has been scrapped. In a statement from the company that introduced the scheme Ukwildcamping, read here, they announced its suspension. The company were clearly overwhelmed by the outpouring of rage against this proposal by the outdoor community. This shows how out of touch these men in suits are with the culture of many of us in the outdoors.
In Brexit Britain this is a rare example of common sense prevailing. The drive to commercialise just about everything in the outdoors at times seems unstoppable but perhaps this is a sigh of the future. Politics in Britain is changing Perhaps we can hold sway over folk like Mr Harris who think they can impose things on us without even consulting us.
These are the people who see pound signs everywhere and would portion up our hills and sell them back to us in neat packages. If only we could unleash such passions against driven grouse shooting, what could we achieve then. At least this demonstrates that the outdoor community does have a voice, and if we can all speak together, it is a voice that can make itself heard.
